The Rigorous New Ethos Selection Process

There are basically two ways for a film to enter into the New Ethos selection process:

Film Selection Process:

  1. Product Discovery (Phase I):  New Ethos personnel research and "scout out" potential films for consideration by attending film festivals, reviewing films submitted for consideration, interacting with various industry ad visors, and especially consulting with various studios to determine which films may need special attention.  A film is recommended from this phase for a partial jury in Phase II (Preliminary Review).
  2. Preliminary Review (Phase II):  At least 1 member of the Jury Committee screens this product for review under the New Ethos film criteria.  If the product passes this review for potential as "New Ethos Excellence" or "New Ethos Selection" category, it is referred for Phase III, Full Jury Review.  If more than one of the Jury Committee members have evaluated a film in Phase II and a majority have found it unacceptable, the product is not referred for Phase III.
  3. Full Jury Review (Phase III):  Each jury member screens the film under consideration and evaluates product based on the New Ethos film criteria.  Jury members then deliberate to either recommend the film for a "New Ethos Excellence" or "New Ethos Selection" logo, or recommend for the "You Decide" category, or for not promotion at all (2/3 vote required).  If Jury recommends film for either "New Ethos Excellence" or "New Ethos Selection" film is submitted to USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting for ratification (Phase IV).
  4. Ratification (Phase IV):  Before the Executive Director approves to award logo and to post product on New Ethos website, ratification is sought by the USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting.  New Ethos will deny films that the USCCB gives an “O” (Offensive to Catholic Film) classification.  New Ethos assures, with its specialized and talented jury, that a film with "O" classification will not be considered past the Phase I process.
